Observation Narrative
Plot documents rocky riverbank scrub at the foot of small cliffs of thermally metamorphosed silststone along the Rappahannock River. Substrate of outcrops, boulders, and gravelly grottoes is scoured in major floods and supports an unusual shrubland co-dominated by Ilex decidua and Carpinus caroliniana. Numerous flood-tolerant woody and herbaceous associates co-occur. See also plot PHWM009 for similar vegetation occurring in a somewhat different alluvial habitat on the other side of the river.
